DAY 7
October 7
Biblical Focus: Jesus
Matthew 14:23 (NLT)
After sending them home, he went up into the hills by himself to pray. Night fell while he was there alone.
The Son of God — who needed nothing — needed this.
Again and again the Gospels catch Jesus slipping away. Before dawn, into the hills, across the lake, into the wilderness — alone, in silence, to be with His Father. The busiest life ever lived was anchored in solitude. The most important voice in history was formed in the quiet.
This should stop us. If the Son of God, sinless and unhurried, made silent solitude the rhythm of His life, what makes us think we can live without it? We treat silence as a luxury for the spiritually advanced or the temperamentally quiet. Jesus treated it as necessity — as the source from which everything else flowed.
Notice when He went: after sending the crowds home, when the demands were greatest, when there was every reason to keep working. And notice how long: “Night fell while he was there alone.” This was no hurried five minutes squeezed between obligations. It was unrushed, extended communion — the deep well from which His public power was drawn.
We have inverted His pattern. We give God the scraps of our attention, the leftover minutes, the drowsy end of the day — and wonder why our souls feel thin. Jesus gave the Father the choicest hours and the fullest silence, and out of that hidden life came words that still shake the world.
The silence of Jesus was not empty. It was full — full of the Father, full of communion beyond words, full of a love that needed no speech to be shared. This is what silence with God can become: not absence, but the deepest presence; not nothing, but the fullness that language cannot hold.
Follow Him into the hills. You will not find a technique there. You will find a Person — the same Father Jesus withdrew to meet, waiting in the quiet for you. The Son made a habit of this silence. Let it become the anchor of your life, as it was of His.
THE PRACTICE OF SILENCE
Take Jesus’ pattern seriously today: give God your best time, not your leftover minutes. Choose the hour when you are most awake and alert, and spend part of it alone and silent with the Father. Guard it the way Jesus guarded His — by deliberately withdrawing, even when there is much to do.
Prayer: Jesus, You who needed nothing still sought the silence of Your Father. Draw me into the hills with You. Let me learn the hidden life from which everything flows. Amen.
