Biblical Focus: Zacchaeus
Luke 19:8 (NLT)
Meanwhile, Zacchaeus stood before the Lord and said, "I will give half my wealth to the poor, Lord, and if I have cheated people on their taxes, I will give them back four times as much!"
Read Luke 19:1–10. Zacchaeus was a chief tax collector, a man who had gotten rich by cheating his own people. Then Jesus came to his house. And without being told to, Zacchaeus opened his wallet.
Notice the order. Jesus did not say, "Give back the money and then I'll come to your house." He came first, and the change followed. Grace came before generosity. But the change was real, and it reached the place Zacchaeus had guarded most: his money.
Jesus talked about money more than almost any other subject, because money reveals the heart. "Wherever your treasure is, there the desires of your heart will also be" (Matthew 6:21). You can claim transformation in many areas, but if your wallet is untouched, your heart may be too.
This is a challenging mark. Many believers have surrendered much to God, but still hold their finances with a closed fist. Giving is calculated and comfortable. Generosity costs nothing. Debts or wrongs from the past are left unaddressed.
Zacchaeus went further than the law required. He did not just stop cheating. He made restitution, fourfold. Transformation does not just stop doing wrong. It goes back to make things right.
And Jesus' response? "Salvation has come to this home today" (v. 9).
The Practice of Transformation
Review your spending for the last month. Ask God: "Does my spending show that You have my heart?" Then do one generous act this week that actually costs you something. If you owe someone restitution, take the first step to make it right.
✦ Reflection ✦
Would your bank statement show that Jesus has come to your house?
Prayer: Lord, You have reached my heart. Reach my wallet too. Make me generous like You. Amen.
Grace came before generosity, but generosity followed.
