Biblical Focus: A Father's Correction
Hebrews 12:11 (NLT)
No discipline is enjoyable while it is happening—it's painful! But afterward there will be a peaceful harvest of right living for those who are trained in this way.
Scripture is honest: discipline hurts. God does not ask you to pretend otherwise. But the writer of Hebrews insists that God's discipline is proof of His love: "For the Lord disciplines those he loves" (v. 6). An absent father does not correct. A loving one does.
Notice the last phrase: "for those who are trained in this way." Discipline does not automatically produce a harvest. The same hardship can make one person gentle and another person bitter. The difference is whether we let it train us.
This is the challenge. When God corrects you, through conviction, consequences, or hard circumstances, what is your instinct? Do you justify yourself? Blame others? Grit your teeth and wait for it to pass? Or do you ask, "Father, what are You teaching me?"
The word "trained" comes from the world of athletics. It is the same root as our word gymnasium. Athletes do not resent their coach for making them sore. They know the soreness is producing strength. Transformation requires the same mindset. Every correction from God is a workout for your soul.
And the promise is sweet: "a peaceful harvest." Not an anxious, striving harvest, but a peaceful one. Those who submit to God's training end up at rest, which is exactly where December will take us.
The Practice of Transformation
Read Hebrews 12:5–11. Identify one area where you sense God's correction right now. Instead of asking Him to stop it, ask Him to help you learn it. Write down the lesson you think He is teaching.
✦ Reflection ✦
Is your current hardship making you softer or harder?
Prayer: Father, thank You for loving me enough to correct me. Train me. Don't let this pain be wasted. Amen.
Discipline does not produce fruit unless we let it train us.
