Biblical Focus: Saul of Tarsus
Acts 9:18 (NLT)
Instantly, something like scales fell from Saul's eyes, and he regained his sight. Then he got up and was baptized.
Saul was the most religious man in the room. He knew the Scriptures, kept the law, and burned with zeal for God. And he was completely blind.
On the road to Damascus, Jesus struck him down with a light so bright it took his sight. For three days Saul sat in darkness, not eating or drinking (Acts 9:9). Then God sent Ananias, and the scales fell.
Here is the challenge: the scales on Saul's eyes were not ignorance. They were certainty. Saul was sure he was right. His religious confidence had blinded him to the very God he claimed to serve. And the most dangerous blindness is the kind we cannot detect, because we feel so confident in our sight.
We all have scales. Prejudices we call convictions. Grudges we call discernment. Traditions we call truth. Opinions about people, churches, or politics so certain that we can no longer see what God is doing in front of us.
Transformation sometimes requires three days of darkness. Seasons where God takes away what we thought we saw clearly, so that we can see Him truly. If you are in a season where your certainties have been shaken, do not panic. It may be that the scales are about to fall.
Notice also: God used an ordinary, frightened believer named Ananias to help Saul see. Sometimes our scales fall through the hands of someone we would never expect.
The Practice of Transformation
Pray Psalm 139:23–24 slowly. Then name one strong opinion you hold about a person or group. Ask God, "Is this Your view, or mine?" Be willing to be wrong.
✦ Reflection ✦
What are you so certain about that you may have stopped seeing clearly?
Prayer: Lord, show me my scales. Take away my blind certainty, and let me see You as You are. Amen.
The most dangerous blindness feels like perfect sight.
