Biblical Focus: The Vine and the Branches
John 15:2 (NLT)
He cuts off every branch of mine that doesn't produce fruit, and he prunes the branches that do bear fruit so they will produce even more.
In March we learned to abide, and in August we entered union. But Jesus attached a hard promise to that beautiful image of the vine: the Gardener carries a knife.
Notice who gets pruned. Not the barren branches. Those are cut off. It is the fruitful branches that are pruned. This means that if you are bearing fruit, you should expect the knife. Pruning is not a sign that something is wrong. It is a sign that God sees more fruit in you.
What does God prune? Often, not sin. Sin is easy to recognize as dead wood. God prunes good things: a ministry you love, a relationship, a role, a comfort, a gift you have relied on. Healthy growth that is drawing energy away from the best fruit. That is what makes pruning so painful. It feels like God is taking away what was good.
A pruned vine looks worse before it looks better. It looks stripped and bare. If you have lost something good this year and wondered why God allowed it, consider whether the Gardener was pruning you for more fruit.
The key is to stay connected. A pruned branch still attached to the vine will flourish. A branch that pulls away in bitterness withers. Do not let the pain of pruning drive you from the Vine.
The Practice of Transformation
List the good things you lost or gave up this year. Next to each, ask God, "What fruit are You making room for?" Thank Him for one specific cut, even if it still hurts.
✦ Reflection ✦
Is there something good God is asking you to let Him cut back?
Prayer: Gardener, I trust Your knife. Cut what You must. Keep me attached to the Vine. Amen.
Pruning is a compliment from the Gardener.
