Biblical Focus: The Tongue
James 3:10 (NLT)
And so blessing and cursing come pouring out of the same mouth. Surely, my brothers and sisters, this is not right!
James says the tongue is a small part of the body that can set a whole forest on fire (vv. 5–6). And then he names the great inconsistency of religious people: we praise God on Sunday and tear down people made in His image on Monday.
In October we practiced silence and learned to set a guard over our mouths. Now we ask a harder question: when we do speak, what comes out? Jesus said, "Whatever is in your heart determines what you say" (Matthew 12:34). Your words are a window into your transformation. You cannot have a transformed heart and an untransformed mouth for long.
Consider the subtle ways the tongue reveals the old self. Sarcasm that wounds while pretending to joke. "Prayer requests" that are really gossip. Complaining. Exaggerating to make a story better. Criticizing leaders. Speaking harshly to family members in ways you would never speak to strangers.
The challenge is that our words often feel justified. I was only telling the truth. They needed to hear it. I was just venting. But James does not leave room for excuses. Blessing and cursing from the same mouth is not right.
A transformed tongue speaks life. It encourages. It tells the truth in love. It stays silent when silence is kinder. And it apologizes quickly.
The Practice of Transformation
For one full day, keep a tally of every negative word you speak about another person, whether present or absent. Tonight, review the tally honestly. Ask forgiveness from God, and from anyone you spoke harshly to.
✦ Reflection ✦
What would someone conclude about your heart from your words this week?
Prayer: Lord, set a guard over my mouth. Clean my heart so my words pour out blessing, not cursing. Amen.
The mouth reveals what the heart conceals.
