DAY 3
October 3
Biblical Focus: David
Psalm 141:3 (NLT)
Take control of what I say, O Lord, and guard my lips.
The first silence is not toward God. It is toward everyone else.
Before we can be silent before God, we must learn to be silent among people. David — poet, king, a man never short of words — prays a startling prayer: Lord, take control of my mouth. Guard my lips. He knows something we resist: that an ungoverned tongue is the sign of an ungoverned soul.
We imagine the spiritual battle happens in dramatic places. More often it happens in the half-second before we speak — the retort we could resist, the opinion no one needed, the gossip dressed as concern, the last word we cannot bear to surrender. Every one of these is a small refusal of silence.
There is a discipline the ancient believers called custody of the tongue — the deliberate restraint of speech, not because words are evil, but because so many of ours are unnecessary, and the unnecessary ones crowd out the holy. A mouth always moving cannot hear. A soul always talking cannot pray.
David does not say, “I will guard my lips.” He knows he cannot. He asks God to do it: “Take control of what I say.” The silence we need is not mere self-restraint — gritted teeth and bitten tongues. It is a surrender of the mouth to God, so that speech becomes His to govern.
Watch what your words are for. So much of our speaking is self-defense, self-promotion, self-justification — the endless labor of managing how we appear. Silence lays that labor down. It is a quiet confession that we do not need to win, explain, or impress. God knows. That is enough.
Learn this outward silence first. The person who cannot stop talking to others will never learn to be still before God. Guard your lips today — and you will find the guarded mouth becomes a doorway to the listening heart.
THE PRACTICE OF SILENCE
For one full day, practice a single restraint: do not speak the unnecessary word. Before you offer an opinion, a correction, a complaint, or the last word, pause and ask, “Does this need to be said, by me, right now?” Let most of them go unsaid. Notice how much quieter your soul becomes.
Prayer: Lord, take control of what I say. Guard my lips from the words that crowd out Yours, and teach me the holy restraint that opens the ear of my heart. Amen.
A mouth always moving cannot hear.
