DAY 29
October 29
Biblical Focus: Isaiah
Isaiah 26:3 (NLT)
You will keep in perfect peace all who trust in you, all whose thoughts are fixed on you!
The settled soul is not the one with no troubles. It is the one whose thoughts are fixed on God.
Isaiah names the secret of the quieted soul in a single sentence: “You will keep in perfect peace all who trust in you, all whose thoughts are fixed on you.” Perfect peace — the deep, unshakable stillness we have been seeking all month — is not the reward of a calm life. It is the fruit of a fixed gaze.
The Hebrew behind “perfect peace” is shalom shalom — peace, peace — a doubling that means completeness, wholeness, a peace so full it is spoken twice. And it is promised not to those whose circumstances are peaceful, but to those “whose thoughts are fixed” on God. The peace flows from where the mind is anchored, not from how calm the surroundings are.
This is the whole discipline of silence distilled: the fixing of our scattered attention on God. Our thoughts, left to themselves, run everywhere — to fear, to grievance, to the endless replay of what troubles us. Silence gathers the scattered mind and fixes it, again and again, on the One who is our peace. And where the mind is fixed on God, peace comes.
Notice it is not effortless in the sense of passive — the mind must be fixed, held, returned. This is the labor of the quiet: whenever the thoughts scatter back to worry, we bring them home again to God. Not once, but a thousand times. The peace is perfect; the fixing is a discipline. And the two go together — the settled soul is the soul that keeps returning its gaze.
“All who trust in you.” Underneath the fixed thoughts is trust — the deep confidence that God is who He says He is, that He holds what we cannot, that we are safe in His keeping. The mind fixed on a God we do not trust brings no peace. But the mind fixed on the God we trust brings the peace that is spoken twice, the wholeness the noisy soul could never find.
So let this be the settled center you carry out of the month. Not a life without trouble — that was never the promise. But a soul kept in perfect peace, because its thoughts are fixed on God and its trust is placed in Him. Fix your gaze. Return it when it wanders. And be kept, in the middle of everything, in the peace that only He can give.
THE PRACTICE OF SILENCE
Whenever your thoughts scatter to worry today, practice “fixing” them on God. Each time you notice the mind running to fear or grievance, gently return it: “My thoughts, fixed on You. My trust, placed in You.” Do this as many times as needed — it is not failure to keep returning; the returning is the discipline. Let the fixed gaze become perfect peace.
Prayer: Lord, keep me in perfect peace as I fix my thoughts on You and trust in You. When my mind scatters to fear, draw it home again. Be the settled center of my soul. Amen.
Perfect peace is not the reward of a calm life. It is the fruit of a fixed gaze.
Help Choose Our 2027 Devotional
As this year of Wrapped in His Presence comes to a close, we're praying about where the Lord is leading us next, and I'd love your help deciding. There are three possible journeys for 2027:
Refined: The Refiner's Fire (Malachi 3:2–3)
Abiding Fruit: From Presence to Overflow (Galatians 5:22–23)
Wounded to Carry: The Ministry of Comfort (2 Corinthians 1:4)
Please pray over them, then vote here for the one that stirs your spirit.
