DAY 28
October 28
Biblical Focus: Jesus
John 14:27 (NLT)
I am leaving you with a gift—peace of mind and heart. And the peace I give is a gift the world cannot give. So don’t be troubled or afraid.
The silence you found in the quiet place is meant to be carried into the loud world.
The month is nearly over, and soon the ordinary noise will close back in — the demands, the screens, the crowds, the clamor. The question that decides whether any of this lasts is simple: can the silence you found in the quiet place survive the noise of the world? Jesus says it can, because what He gives is not a quiet room but a quiet heart.
“The peace I give is a gift the world cannot give.” The world can offer quiet surroundings — a still morning, an empty house, a walk in the woods. But it cannot give peace of heart, and it cannot protect the peace you have when the surroundings grow loud again. Only Christ gives a peace that does not depend on circumstances — an interior stillness you can carry anywhere.
This is the goal all along: not to escape the noisy world permanently, but to carry an inner silence into it. The old contemplatives spoke of building an “inner cell” — a quiet room within the soul that you can withdraw into no matter how loud it is outside. You do not have to flee to the wilderness. You carry the wilderness within you, a portable place of quiet with God.
This is what the month has been forming: not a series of silent moments walled off from real life, but a habitual interior stillness that goes with you — into the meeting, the traffic, the conflict, the crowd. The silence becomes less a place you visit and more a way you live, a quiet center that the noise cannot reach because Christ Himself is keeping it.
“Don’t be troubled or afraid.” The troubled, fearful heart is the noisy heart — the one at the mercy of every loud thing around it. But the heart that has learned inner silence has an anchor the noise cannot drag away. When the world grows loud, you can return, in an instant, to the quiet room within, where Christ is, and where His peace stands guard.
So do not leave the silence behind when the month ends. Carry it. Learn to step into the inner cell in the middle of the loudest day — a breath, a word, a turning of the heart toward the Christ who dwells within. The world will be as noisy as ever. But you will carry a silence it cannot give and cannot take away.
THE PRACTICE OF SILENCE
Practice the “inner cell” today in the middle of noise. When you hit a loud, busy, or stressful moment, pause for even ten seconds: breathe, turn your heart inward to Christ who dwells there, and return to the silence — “Your peace, here, now.” Do this several times through the day. Prove to yourself that the quiet can travel with you into the clamor.
Prayer: Jesus, You give a peace the world cannot give or take away. Let me carry the silence I found with You into the loud world — an inner cell where You dwell, and where Your peace stands guard. Amen.
You do not have to flee to the wilderness. You can carry it within you.
Help Choose Our 2027 Devotional
As this year of Wrapped in His Presence comes to a close, we're praying about where the Lord is leading us next, and I'd love your help deciding. There are three possible journeys for 2027:
Refined: The Refiner's Fire (Malachi 3:2–3)
Abiding Fruit: From Presence to Overflow (Galatians 5:22–23)
Wounded to Carry: The Ministry of Comfort (2 Corinthians 1:4)
Please pray over them, then vote here for the one that stirs your spirit.
