DAY 26
October 26
Biblical Focus: Mary
Luke 2:19 (NLT)
but Mary kept all these things in her heart and thought about them often.
Silence is not the enemy of the Word. It is where the Word takes root.
Shepherds had come with wild news of angels. The whole hillside was talking. And in the middle of the noise and wonder, Mary did something quietly profound: she said nothing. “Mary kept all these things in her heart and thought about them often.” While others spoke, she treasured and pondered in silence.
We might fear that silence is the enemy of the Word — that to grow quiet is to stop engaging Scripture, to drift into a wordless mysticism unmoored from truth. Mary shows us the opposite. Her silence was full of the Word. She was not emptying her mind of God’s revelation; she was letting it sink deeper than words could reach, treasuring it, turning it over, letting it take root in the soil of a quiet heart.
This is the marriage of silence and the Word that the deepest saints have always known. We read the Word — and then we fall silent before it, letting it settle, ponder it, treasure it, allow it to do its slow work in us. Words heard and rushed past change little. Words received in silence and treasured in the heart change everything.
The ancient practice was to take a single phrase of Scripture and hold it in silence — not analyzing it, but savoring it, letting it descend from the head into the heart, listening for what the Spirit would speak through it. This is not less engagement with the Word. It is more — the difference between glancing at a treasure and slowly turning it in your hands.
“She thought about them often.” The pondering was not a single moment but a habit, a returning. Mary carried the Word within her and revisited it in the quiet again and again, letting its meaning unfold over years. This is how the Word becomes not just information we possess but life that possesses us — treasured, pondered, hidden in the heart.
So do not let your silence become empty, and do not let your reading remain shallow. Marry the two. Take the Word into the quiet. Treasure it. Ponder it. Let it sink past your understanding into your heart, and return to it often. Silence is not where the Word goes to die. It is the soil where the Word finally takes root.
THE PRACTICE OF SILENCE
Practice “treasuring” the Word today. Take one short verse or phrase of Scripture — just a line — and instead of reading on, hold it in silence. Repeat it slowly. Ponder it. Let it descend from your mind into your heart. Sit quietly with it for several minutes, listening for what the Spirit stirs, and carry it with you through the day.
Prayer: Lord, like Mary, let me treasure Your Word in my heart and ponder it in silence. Let it sink past my understanding and take root in me, until it becomes not just words I know but life I live. Amen.
Words received in silence and treasured in the heart change everything.
Help Choose Our 2027 Devotional
As this year of Wrapped in His Presence comes to a close, we're praying about where the Lord is leading us next, and I'd love your help deciding. There are three possible journeys for 2027:
Refined: The Refiner's Fire (Malachi 3:2–3)
Abiding Fruit: From Presence to Overflow (Galatians 5:22–23)
Wounded to Carry: The Ministry of Comfort (2 Corinthians 1:4)
Please pray over them, then vote here for the one that stirs your spirit.
