DAY 24
October 24
Biblical Focus: Paul
2 Corinthians 4:16–18 (NLT)
That is why we never give up. Though our bodies are dying, our spirits are being renewed every day… So we don’t look at the troubles we can see now; rather, we fix our gaze on things that cannot be seen.
Silence is a stripping. But everything it takes was killing you.
We are past the darkest country now, and something has happened in the walking through it. Silence, we discover, is a kind of stripping. It takes away the noise we hid behind, the props we leaned on, the false comforts, the performances, the endless self-justifying words. And though it feels like loss, everything silence takes was quietly killing us.
“Though our bodies are dying, our spirits are being renewed every day.” There is a dying and a renewing happening at once. What is being stripped away is the outer, false, performing self — the person built out of noise and image and control. What is being renewed is the inner, true self, the one hidden with Christ, the one that can only grow when the false self is quieted.
This is why silence is so uncomfortable, and so necessary. The false self cannot survive it. It needs an audience, a running commentary, a constant stream of stimulation to sustain the illusion of its own importance. Take all that away, and it begins to die. Silence is the death of the self we were performing — and the slow birth of the self we truly are in Christ.
“We don’t look at the troubles we can see now; rather, we fix our gaze on things that cannot be seen.” Silence retrains the gaze. It pulls our eyes off the visible, the urgent, the temporary — all the loud things clamoring for attention — and fixes them on the unseen and eternal. What is loudest is rarely what matters most. Silence teaches us to tell the difference.
Do not resent what the silence takes. The stripped-away comforts, the quieted noise, the dismantled performances — these were not your life. They were what stood between you and your life. The soul emerges from silence lighter, truer, freed of the weight it had mistaken for itself.
So let the silence do its stripping. Let the false self die in the quiet, unmourned. Fix your gaze on what cannot be seen. And trust that everything real — everything eternal, everything that is truly you in Christ — is not destroyed by the silence but revealed by it, renewed day by day beneath the noise you have finally set down.
THE PRACTICE OF SILENCE
Ask God in the silence today: “What are You stripping away in me — and what are You renewing?” Name one thing the quiet has begun to take (a performance, a false comfort, a need for noise or approval) and deliberately release it: “This was never my life. I let it go.” Then fix your gaze on one unseen, eternal thing, and rest in it.
Prayer: Lord, let the silence strip away everything false in me, unmourned. Renew my inner self day by day, and fix my gaze on what cannot be seen. What You take was only killing me; what You give is life. Amen.
Everything silence takes was quietly killing you.
Help Choose Our 2027 Devotional
As this year of Wrapped in His Presence comes to a close, we're praying about where the Lord is leading us next, and I'd love your help deciding. There are three possible journeys for 2027:
Refined: The Refiner's Fire (Malachi 3:2–3)
Abiding Fruit: From Presence to Overflow (Galatians 5:22–23)
Wounded to Carry: The Ministry of Comfort (2 Corinthians 1:4)
Please pray over them, then vote here for the one that stirs your spirit.
