DAY 23
October 23
Biblical Focus: Isaiah
Isaiah 50:10 (NLT)
Who among you fears the Lord and obeys his servant? If you are walking in darkness, without a ray of light, trust in the Lord and rely on your God.
This is the final surrender of the silent season: to let go of the need to hear, and simply trust.
Isaiah speaks to a specific kind of believer — not the backslidden or the faithless, but the devout: “Who among you fears the Lord and obeys his servant?” And to this faithful one, he says the surprising thing: you may find yourself “walking in darkness, without a ray of light.” Even the obedient walk through the silence. Devotion does not exempt us from the dark.
This matters, because we assume that if we are walking rightly, God will always be clearly with us — that darkness must mean we have sinned or strayed. But Isaiah speaks to the one who fears the Lord and obeys, and still walks without a ray of light. The silence is not always discipline. Sometimes it is simply the path the faithful are asked to walk.
And what are we to do in that lightless place? “Trust in the Lord and rely on your God.” Not: find the light. Not: figure out why. Not: make the darkness lift. Simply trust — in the dark, without answers, without the felt presence, without a ray of light to walk by. This is the purest faith there is: trust that needs no evidence but God’s own character.
There is a temptation, when God is silent, to manufacture light of our own — to grasp at false comforts, forced feelings, easy answers, anything to escape the dark. Isaiah warns against it in the very next verse: those who light their own fires will lie down in torment. Better to walk in honest darkness trusting God than in false light we kindled ourselves.
This is the final surrender of the silent season: to release even the demand to hear. We began the month laying down our words. We end it laying down our need for God’s. To trust Him when He speaks is one thing. To trust Him when He is silent — to rely on God with no ray of light — is the trust that has been purified of everything but God alone.
So if you are walking in darkness, without a ray of light, hear Isaiah’s word as the invitation it is. Do not kindle false fires. Do not demand the light before you will trust. Simply rely on your God — in the dark, by faith, holding the hand you cannot see. This is the deepest thing silence teaches: to trust the God who has, for now, gone quiet.
THE PRACTICE OF SILENCE
Practice trusting without a ray of light today. Where God has been silent, resist the urge to manufacture your own answers or false comforts. Instead, pray simply: “I don’t have light. I don’t have answers. But I trust You and rely on You anyway.” Then walk your day in that naked trust, holding the hand you cannot see.
Prayer: Lord, I am walking in darkness without a ray of light — and I will not kindle false fires. I trust in You. I rely on my God. Hold my hand in the dark, and let that be enough. Amen.
To trust Him when He is silent is the trust purified of everything but God alone.
Help Choose Our 2027 Devotional
As this year of Wrapped in His Presence comes to a close, we're praying about where the Lord is leading us next, and I'd love your help deciding. There are three possible journeys for 2027:
Refined: The Refiner's Fire (Malachi 3:2–3)
Abiding Fruit: From Presence to Overflow (Galatians 5:22–23)
Wounded to Carry: The Ministry of Comfort (2 Corinthians 1:4)
Please pray over them, then vote here for the one that stirs your spirit.
