DAY 20
October 20
Biblical Focus: Jesus
Isaiah 53:7 (NLT)
He was oppressed and treated harshly, yet he never said a word. He was led like a lamb to the slaughter. And as a sheep is silent before the shearers, he did not open his mouth.
There is a silence stronger than any speech: the silence of the Lamb.
Before His accusers, in the hour when a single word could have called down legions of angels, Jesus was silent. Falsely charged, spat upon, condemned — “he never said a word.” The Word of God, through whom all things were spoken into being, chose in His deepest suffering to say nothing at all.
We tend to think strength speaks and weakness stays quiet. But here the silence is the strength. Jesus’ refusal to defend Himself was not helplessness; it was the most powerful restraint in history — the Lamb choosing silence so that our salvation might be accomplished. He could have answered every charge. He chose the cross instead.
There is a silence that is not defeat but obedience — the deliberate laying down of self-defense into the hands of God. “He did not retaliate… He left his case in the hands of God, who always judges fairly” (1 Peter 2:23). Jesus did not need to justify Himself before men because He entrusted Himself to His Father. His silence was an act of trust.
This confronts our compulsion to defend ourselves. How much of our talking is self-justification — explaining, correcting, making sure we are understood and vindicated? The Lamb shows another way: the silence that entrusts its cause to God rather than winning its case before men. There are wrongs we are called not to answer, but to carry — in silence, into the Father’s hands.
The silence of the Lamb was not empty. It was full of love — love for the very ones condemning Him, love strong enough to hold its peace while injustice raged, love that would rather die than defend itself at our expense. This is the silence that saved the world: not the silence of absence, but the silence of a love that will not stop loving.
When you are wronged and everything in you wants to speak, to justify, to make them see — remember the Lamb. Some battles are won not by answering but by entrusting. Learn the silence of Jesus: not the sullen silence of resentment, but the strong, loving silence of a soul that has placed its case in the hands of a Father who judges fairly.
THE PRACTICE OF SILENCE
Today, when you are wronged, misjudged, or provoked — and the urge to defend yourself rises — practice the silence of the Lamb. Do not fire back. Entrust your case to God: “Father, I place this in Your hands. You judge fairly.” Let one wrong go unanswered today, offered up in the strong silence of trust rather than the weak noise of self-defense.
Prayer: Jesus, You were silent before Your accusers and entrusted Yourself to the Father. Teach me that strong, loving silence — to lay down my self-defense and place my cause in Your hands. Amen.
The silence that saved the world was not the silence of absence,
but of a love that would not stop loving.
Help Choose Our 2027 Devotional
As this year of Wrapped in His Presence comes to a close, we're praying about where the Lord is leading us next, and I'd love your help deciding. There are three possible journeys for 2027:
Refined: The Refiner's Fire (Malachi 3:2–3)
Abiding Fruit: From Presence to Overflow (Galatians 5:22–23)
Wounded to Carry: The Ministry of Comfort (2 Corinthians 1:4)
Please pray over them, then vote here for the one that stirs your spirit.
