DAY 19
October 19
Biblical Focus: Paul
2 Corinthians 12:8–9 (NLT)
Three different times I begged the Lord to take it away. Each time he said, “My grace is all you need. My power works best in weakness.”
Sometimes God’s silence is not silence at all. It is an answer we did not want.
Paul had a thorn — some torment he never fully names — and he did the natural thing: he begged God to remove it. Three times he pleaded. And here is the part we rush past: God said no. Not silence, exactly, but something that can feel worse — a clear answer that was not the answer Paul wanted.
We often interpret God’s silence as no answer. But sometimes the silence is the answer. The thing we keep begging Him to change, and He does not change, is not always His inattention — it is His reply. “My grace is all you need.” The unanswered prayer was answered; we simply did not like what He said.
This is one of the hardest lessons of the silent seasons: that God, in His love, sometimes leaves the thorn in place. Not because He is powerless to remove it — “everything is possible for You,” Jesus said in Gethsemane, and still the cup did not pass. But because there is a grace found only in the unremoved thorn, a power made perfect only in the weakness we begged Him to take away.
“My power works best in weakness.” The thorn Paul wanted gone became the very place Christ’s power rested on him. What we perceive as God’s refusal to act may be His decision to work in a deeper way — not around our weakness, but through it; not by removing the hard thing, but by meeting us inside it with a sufficiency we would never have known otherwise.
Come to the point Paul reached: “Now I am glad to boast about my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ can work through me.” This is not resignation. It is a discovery — that the unanswered prayer opened a door the answered prayer never could have. The thorn that stayed became the throne where grace sat down.
So when God will not remove the thing you have begged Him to remove, do not assume He is silent or absent. Listen more closely. He may be saying, “My grace is all you need.” And that answer, though it is not the one you asked for, is enough — more than enough — to carry you through the very thing you wanted taken away.
THE PRACTICE OF SILENCE
Take the thorn you keep begging God to remove — the circumstance, the weakness, the pain that will not lift. Instead of only asking again for its removal, sit in silence and ask a different question: “Lord, what grace are You offering me inside this?” Then receive His answer: “My grace is all you need.” Let the unremoved thorn become a place of grace.
Prayer: Lord, I have begged You to take it away, and still it remains. Help me hear Your answer: “My grace is all you need.” Let Your power rest on my weakness, and be enough. Amen.
The thorn that stayed became the throne where grace sat down.
Help Choose Our 2027 Devotional
As this year of Wrapped in His Presence comes to a close, we're praying about where the Lord is leading us next, and I'd love your help deciding. There are three possible journeys for 2027:
Refined: The Refiner's Fire (Malachi 3:2–3)
Abiding Fruit: From Presence to Overflow (Galatians 5:22–23)
Wounded to Carry: The Ministry of Comfort (2 Corinthians 1:4)
Please pray over them, then vote here for the one that stirs your spirit.
