DAY 18
October 18
Biblical Focus: Isaiah
Isaiah 45:15 (NLT)
Truly, O God of Israel, our Savior, you work in mysterious ways.
His hiddenness is not His absence. It is one of His mysterious ways.
Isaiah confesses something the comfortable rarely admit: God works in mysterious ways — ways so hidden that older translations render this verse, “Truly, you are a God who hides himself.” The hiddenness of God is not a flaw in our faith. It is a feature of His character, woven through the whole story of Scripture.
We prefer a God who is always obvious — clear signs, immediate answers, unmistakable direction. But the God of the Bible is often veiled. He hid Himself in a cloud, in a whisper, in a manger, in the ordinary face of a carpenter. He conceals as often as He reveals, and both are acts of love. A God always glaring would blind us. A God sometimes hidden draws us to seek.
The hiddenness has a purpose: it makes us seekers. “You will find me when you seek me, if you look for me in earnest” (Jeremiah 29:13). If God were always plainly visible, we would never learn to hunger, to search, to press through the veil. His hiding is not to lose us but to deepen our seeking — to turn casual acquaintance into desperate love.
There is also a mercy in the mystery. “As the heavens are higher than the earth… so my ways are higher than your ways” (Isaiah 55:9). The very things we cannot understand — the silences, the delays, the hidden workings — are often the places God is doing His deepest good, in ways too high for us to trace. What looks like His absence is frequently His most careful work.
This asks a hard, freeing thing of us: to let God be God — to stop demanding that He always explain Himself, always answer on our timeline, always make His ways plain. Faith is not the possession of all the answers. It is trust in the God who hides Himself, confidence that the mystery is held by a Savior who loves us.
So when God is veiled, do not accuse Him of absence. He is working in mysterious ways, as He always has. Seek Him in the hiddenness. Trust Him in the mystery. And know that the God who hides Himself is the same God who, at the right time and in His own way, unveils His face to those who seek Him in earnest.
THE PRACTICE OF SILENCE
Bring to God one thing you cannot understand — a silence, a delay, a mystery in your life you have been demanding He explain. Instead of demanding an answer today, practice trust: “You work in mysterious ways. I don’t understand this, but I trust that You are hidden here, working good I cannot see.” Release the need to have it explained.
Prayer: O God our Savior, You work in mysterious ways, and sometimes You hide Your face. Teach me to seek You in the mystery and trust You in the veil. Let me find You, even here. Amen.
A God always glaring would blind us. A God sometimes hidden draws us to seek.
Help Choose Our 2027 Devotional
As this year of Wrapped in His Presence comes to a close, we're praying about where the Lord is leading us next, and I'd love your help deciding. There are three possible journeys for 2027:
Refined: The Refiner's Fire (Malachi 3:2–3)
Abiding Fruit: From Presence to Overflow (Galatians 5:22–23)
Wounded to Carry: The Ministry of Comfort (2 Corinthians 1:4)
Please pray over them, then vote here for the one that stirs your spirit.
