DAY 17
October 17
Biblical Focus: Job
Job 23:8–10 (NLT)
I go east, but he is not there. I go west, but I cannot find him. I do not see him in the north, for he is hidden. I look to the south, but he is concealed. But he knows where I am going. And when he tests me, I will come out as pure as gold.
You may search every direction and not find Him — and still be held.
Job has lost everything, and now he has lost even the sense of God’s presence. He searches every direction — east, west, north, south — and God is nowhere to be found. “He is hidden… he is concealed.” This is the silence of God at its most bewildering: not only unanswered prayer, but a God who seems to have vanished from every horizon.
And yet notice the hinge on which Job’s faith turns — a single, defiant word: “But.” “I cannot find him. But he knows where I am going.” Job cannot see God, but he holds fast to a deeper truth: God can see him. The silence has hidden God from Job’s sight, but it has not hidden Job from God’s. That distinction is the difference between despair and faith.
This is the discipline of the hidden season: to trust that being unable to find God is not the same as being lost to Him. When you have searched every direction and come up empty, you can still stand on this — He knows where you are going. Your inability to locate Him does not diminish His grip on you by one degree.
And Job dares to say why the hiddenness might be: “When he tests me, I will come out as pure as gold.” Here is the refiner’s fire at the heart of it all. The hidden God is not idle in His silence. He is refining — and some purifying can only happen in the dark, where we cannot see His hand and must trust it anyway.
Gold is not proven in comfort. It is proven in the furnace. And there is a purity God can only work in us when He withdraws the felt sense of His presence — when we can no longer lean on experiences and feelings, and must cling to Him by naked faith alone. The concealment is not cruelty. It is the fire that makes us gold.
So if you cannot find Him — if you have looked in every direction and He is hidden — do not conclude He is gone. Say what Job said. “But he knows where I am going.” Trust the refiner in the dark. And believe that what feels like abandonment is, in His hands, becoming gold.
THE PRACTICE OF SILENCE
If God feels hidden, practice Job’s “but” today. Name the honest reality first: “I cannot find You. I have looked, and You seem hidden.” Then speak the deeper truth over it: “But You know where I am going. You are refining me in the dark, and I will trust Your hand even when I cannot see it.” Let faith have the last word.
Prayer: Lord, I have searched every direction and cannot find You. But You know where I am going. Refine me in this dark silence, and bring me out as gold. I trust the hand I cannot see. Amen.
You cannot find Him. But He knows exactly where you are.
Help Choose Our 2027 Devotional
As this year of Wrapped in His Presence comes to a close, we're praying about where the Lord is leading us next, and I'd love your help deciding. There are three possible journeys for 2027:
Refined: The Refiner's Fire (Malachi 3:2–3)
Abiding Fruit: From Presence to Overflow (Galatians 5:22–23)
Wounded to Carry: The Ministry of Comfort (2 Corinthians 1:4)
Please pray over them, then vote here for the one that stirs your spirit.
