DAY 1
Biblical Focus: The Preacher (Ecclesiastes)
Ecclesiastes 5:1–2 (NLT)
As you enter the house of God, keep your ears open and your mouth shut… Don’t make rash promises, and don’t be hasty in bringing matters before God. After all, God is in heaven, and you are here on earth. So let your words be few.
Before you say anything to God this month, He asks you to stop talking.
We have spent a year learning the postures of the heart. In May, we learned to listen. This month we go further than listening — into silence itself. Not the silence of an empty room, but the silence of a soul that has finally stopped speaking long enough to be spoken to.
The Preacher gives us a strange instruction for people who love God: keep your mouth shut. We are so eager to bring God our words — our requests, our explanations, our bargaining, our noise — that we rarely leave a space in which He might answer. We treat prayer as a monologue we perform rather than a communion we enter.
“God is in heaven, and you are here on earth.” This is not distance. It is proportion. He is God, and you are not. And the fitting response of a small creature before an infinite God is not more words but fewer. Awe closes the mouth. Wonder quiets the tongue. The soul that truly glimpses God does not chatter.
There is a kind of religious talking that is actually a way of avoiding God. We fill the silence because the silence frightens us. In the quiet, there is nothing to hide behind — no performance, no eloquence, no control. Just us, exposed, before the Living God. And so we talk, and talk, and never arrive.
This month asks something difficult of you: to let your words be few. To come into the house of God with your ears open and your mouth shut. To stop informing God of what He already knows, and instead to be still enough that He might inform you.
Silence is not the absence of prayer. It is prayer stripped of everything but attention. It is the deepest form of trust — the trust that says, “I do not need to fill this space. God is here, and that is enough.” Begin there today. Not with words. With the laying down of them.
THE PRACTICE OF SILENCE
Find five uninterrupted minutes. Say only this, once: “God, You are in heaven, and I am on earth. I have nothing to say. I am here to listen.” Then stop speaking — out loud and inwardly — for the rest of the five minutes. When words rise (and they will), gently set them down. You are not trying to think about nothing. You are simply making room.
Prayer: Father, I have brought You so many words. Today I bring You my silence. Teach me to be quiet before You, and in the quiet, to find that You were never far. Amen.
Awe closes the mouth. This month, let it.
