DAY 12
October 12
Biblical Focus: Asaph
Psalm 73:25–26 (NLT)
Whom have I in heaven but you? I desire you more than anything on earth. My health may fail, and my spirit may grow weak, but God remains the strength of my heart; he is mine forever.
What if you came to God today wanting nothing but God?
Asaph arrives at a place few of us reach: “I desire you more than anything on earth.” Not God’s gifts. Not God’s help. God Himself. He has been stripped down to a single desire, and it has set him free. “Whom have I in heaven but you?”
Almost all of our praying has an agenda. We come to God for something — an answer, a rescue, a resolution, relief. These are not wrong; God invites them. But if every meeting with God is transactional, we may spend a lifetime using Him and never simply enjoying Him. The gift becomes the point, and the Giver is forgotten.
Silence teaches a different kind of communion — communion without agenda. You come to God not to get, but to be with. The way you sit with someone you love, needing no conversation, wanting nothing but their company. This is the friendship the whole gospel was aiming at: not merely answered prayers, but God Himself, enjoyed.
“God remains the strength of my heart; he is mine forever.” Asaph has found the one possession that cannot be lost. Health fails. Strength fades. Every other treasure slips through our fingers eventually. But the soul that desires God more than His gifts has anchored itself to the one thing that endures.
There is a purity in agenda-less communion that purifies us in return. When we come to God wanting only Him, our tangled motives are untangled. We stop treating the Father as a means to an end and start loving Him as the end. And strangely, in wanting nothing but Him, we find we have everything.
Today, come to God with empty hands — not to ask, but to be with. Set the requests aside for a while. Let your silence say what Asaph said: “Whom have I in heaven but you? I desire you more than anything on earth.” And discover the joy of a God enjoyed for His own sake.
THE PRACTICE OF SILENCE
In your silent time today, ask God for nothing. No requests, no petitions, no list — just presence. Come simply to be with Him, the way you would sit with someone you love. If a request rises, set it gently aside and return to being. Let this be pure communion: God, wanted for Himself.
Prayer: Lord, so often I come to You for what You give. Today I come only for You. Whom have I in heaven but You? You are the strength of my heart, and You are enough. Amen.
In wanting nothing but Him, you find you have everything.
Help Choose Our 2027 Devotional
As this year of Wrapped in His Presence comes to a close, we're praying about where the Lord is leading us next, and I'd love your help deciding. There are three possible journeys for 2027:
Refined: The Refiner's Fire (Malachi 3:2–3)
Abiding Fruit: From Presence to Overflow (Galatians 5:22–23)
Wounded to Carry: The Ministry of Comfort (2 Corinthians 1:4)
Please pray over them, then vote here for the one that stirs your spirit.
