Biblical Focus: Beholding
2 Corinthians 3:18 (NLT)
So all of us who have had that veil removed can see and reflect the glory of the Lord. And the Lord—who is the Spirit—makes us more and more like him as we are changed into his glorious image.
In October we learned that we become what we behold. Today we see that principle at the center of the whole Christian life.
Paul is contrasting Moses, who wore a veil so the Israelites would not see the glory fading from his face, with believers in Christ. In Christ, the veil is removed. We look at the Lord with unveiled faces, and something astonishing happens: we begin to reflect what we see.
Notice three things. First, this is for “all of us.” Transformation is not for spiritual elites. It is the normal Christian life. Second, the change is gradual: “more and more.” It is a process, not an event. Third, the agent is the Spirit. You do not produce this change by effort. You produce it by attention, and the Spirit does the changing.
This is why so many believers stall. We try to become like Jesus by trying harder, and we fail. But you have never become like anyone by trying. You became like the people you spent time with. You picked up their phrases, their habits, their outlook. Transformation works the same way. Spend time gazing at Jesus, and you will start to look like Him.
So here is the challenge: what are you looking at most? Your problems? Your critics? Your own reflection? You will become like whatever holds your gaze.
The Practice of Transformation
Read Mark 1–2 slowly today. Do not study it for information. Simply watch Jesus: how He speaks, whom He touches, what moves Him. Write down one thing about Him that you want to reflect.
✦ Reflection ✦
Whose face, or what screen, holds most of your attention each day?
Prayer: Lord Jesus, lift every veil from my eyes. Let me behold You until I reflect You. Amen.
You will become like whatever holds your gaze.
