Day 9
Hidden With Christ in God
Scripture: Colossians 3:3–4
"For you died to this life, and your real life is hidden with Christ in God. And when Christ, who is your life, is revealed to the whole world, you will share in all his glory" (Colossians 3:3–4). Slow down at every clause, because Paul is doing something more radical than encouraging you. He is relocating you. He does not say Christ gives you life, or improves your life, or adds meaning to your life. He says Christ is your life—and that life has been carried up and tucked away in the most secure location in all of existence: inside God Himself, wrapped up in Christ.
Consider what it changes to have your true life hidden with Christ in God. It means your deepest identity is not lying exposed on the surface where it can be handled, judged, or damaged by others. It is not up for a vote. It is not at the mercy of your circumstances, your reputation, or your worst day. The world sees the branch but never the sap; it sees the outward life but has no access to the real one. People may misread you, overlook you, flatter you, or reject you—and none of it can touch the truest part of you, because that part is not where they can reach. It is hidden in God.
This is profound comfort for anyone who has spent a life feeling exposed—too visible to the wrong eyes, too unseen by the right ones, never quite safe. Your worth is not hanging out in the open air to be appraised by every passerby. It is sealed. Held. Concealed in the safest place there is. "For he will conceal me there when troubles come; he will hide me in his sanctuary" (Psalm 27:5). When you feel most vulnerable, most raw, most at the mercy of what others think, this is your refuge: the real you cannot be reached by anything that would harm it, because God Himself is the vault.
But there is a harder, holier edge to hiddenness that our exposure-addicted age desperately needs to hear. Your life is not only hidden for protection; it is meant to be hidden—unseen, unapplauded, often entirely unnoticed. We live in a moment that treats visibility as the measure of worth, that trains us to perform every good thing before an audience, that leaves us feeling that what no one witnessed somehow didn't count. Union quietly dismantles all of it. The most important work God does in a soul happens in the dark, in the secret place, unseen even by the person it is happening to. Do not despise your hidden seasons. Do not read obscurity as abandonment. The seed does its truest work underground.
There is a searching question buried in this passage, and it is worth letting it find you: if your life is hidden with Christ in God, why are you still living so much of it for eyes that cannot even see the real you? So much of our striving is performance—arranging our visible life to win approval from people who have no access to our actual life anyway. It is exhausting because it is futile. The applause never reaches the hidden place, and the criticism never reaches it either. To live from your hidden life is to be quietly set free from the tyranny of being seen—free to obey God in secret, to serve where no one notices, to let Him be the only audience that finally matters.
And hiddenness is not the end of the story—it is the seed of a coming unveiling. "When Christ, who is your life, is revealed to the whole world, you will share in all his glory." A day is fixed when everything now concealed will be brought into the open, when the true self God has been forming in secret will be revealed in glory, when what was buried in Him will shine. The hiddenness is not permanent obscurity; it is the dark soil out of which glory grows. What no one sees now, all will see then. What is planted in secret will be harvested in splendor. The seed and the harvest are the same life—one buried, one blazing.
So live today from your hidden life. Stop performing for an audience that cannot see the real you anyway. Stop drawing your sense of worth from visibility, applause, or being noticed. Sink down beneath the surface, into the secret place where your life is joined to Christ in God, and let that hidden union become more real to you than anything happening in the open. Do one good thing today that only God will ever know about—and let it be enough, because the One who sees in secret is the only audience your hidden life was ever meant to have.
Prayer: Father, my real life is hidden with Christ in You—beyond the reach of every opinion, every failure, every threat, safe in the one vault that cannot be broken into. Forgive me for living on the surface, exhausting myself performing for eyes that cannot even see the real me. Teach me to rest in the secret place, to welcome the hidden seasons, to let You do Your buried work in me. And steady me with this: what is hidden in You now will one day be revealed in glory. Amen.
Today, notice one place where you are performing for an audience—seeking to be seen, approved, or noticed. Quietly withdraw from that performance and remind yourself, "My real life is hidden with Christ in God. I don't need to be seen to be safe, and I don't need to be noticed to be worthy." Then do one genuinely good thing today that no one but God will ever know about.
Scripture for Reflection:
Psalm 27:5 — "He will conceal me… hiding me safely within his own dwelling."
Colossians 3:4 — "Christ, who is your life… you will share in all his glory."
Psalm 91:1 — "Those who live in the shelter of the Most High will find rest."
The truest part of you cannot be reached by anything that would harm it.
It is hidden in God—buried like a seed that will one day blaze.
