Day 3
One Spirit With Him
Scripture: 1 Corinthians 6:17
Paul makes a claim so intimate it almost embarrasses us: "But the person who is joined to the Lord is one spirit with him" (1 Corinthians 6:17). One spirit. Not one opinion. Not one goal. Not merely one direction of travel. One spirit—a fusion so complete that where the Lord's Spirit ends and yours begins can no longer be traced.
Remarkably, Paul writes this in the middle of a warning about sexual sin. He is teaching that our bodies are not our own, that intimacy is never merely physical, that we are joined to whatever we give ourselves to. And then he lifts our eyes: the deepest union available to a human being is not with another person at all. It is union with the living Lord, a oneness of spirit that no earthly bond can rival.
This confronts the loneliness that haunts so many believers. We can feel unknown even in a crowded room, unseen even by those closest to us. But union means there is Someone who is nearer to you than your own breath, who knows the thoughts you cannot put into words, who is joined to your very spirit. "You have searched me, Lord, and you know me" (Psalm 139:1). You are not alone in the deepest room of your soul. He is there.
One spirit with Him also means His concerns become ours, almost against our will. Have you noticed how, over time, the things that grieved the heart of Christ begin to grieve yours? How sin you once excused now troubles you? How people you would have ignored now draw your compassion? That is not you becoming a better person by effort. That is one spirit—His life registering His desires within you.
There is comfort here for the weary. If you are joined to the Lord as one spirit, then your prayers are never launched into empty space. The Spirit within you "prays for us with groanings that cannot be expressed in words" (Romans 8:26). When you do not know what to pray, He is already praying inside you. When your faith runs thin, His faithfulness holds. You are carried by the very One you are joined to.
But this closeness also calls for reverence. If your spirit is one with His, then nothing you do is done alone. You cannot take Christ where He would not go and pretend He is not there. Union is our greatest comfort and our deepest accountability at once. He is with you—in the temptation, in the secret, in the moment no one else sees. Let that both keep you and comfort you.
Prayer: Lord, You are joined to my very spirit, closer than my closest friend, nearer than my own thoughts. Forgive me for the times I have lived as though I were on my own. Let the awareness that I am one spirit with You reshape how I pray, how I resist sin, and how I face my loneliness. I am not alone. You are here. Amen.
Today, when you feel most alone—in a hard moment, a quiet room, a crowded place where no one sees you—stop and say quietly, "I am one spirit with the Lord. He is nearer to me than my own breath." Let union answer your loneliness before you reach for your phone or anything else to fill it.
Scripture for Reflection:
Romans 8:26 — "The Holy Spirit prays for us with groanings that cannot be expressed in words."
Psalm 139:1 — "You have searched me, Lord, and you know me."
Acts 17:28 — "For in him we live and move and exist."
There is Someone joined to your very spirit—nearer than your loneliness, deeper than your solitude.
