Day 31

One — The Life You Were Made For

Scripture: John 17:22–23

We have come to the end of the month, and to the end of the great prayer that has carried us through all thirty-one days. Let it wash over you one final time, and hear it now not as a passage you have studied but as the destination you have been traveling toward: "I have given them the glory you gave me, so they may be one as we are one. I am in them, and you are in me. May they experience such perfect unity that the world will know that you sent me and that you love them as much as you love me" (John 17:22–23). This is where the whole journey has been leading, from the first day to this one. Oneness. Perfect unity. The life you were made for.

Look back over the ground we have covered, because the picture is meant to be complete now. We moved from abiding to union—from nearness to genuine oneness. We learned that Christ is not only with us but in us; that we died with Him and were raised with Him; that we are one spirit, members of His body, His very bride; that we are complete in Him, sealed by His Spirit, held by a bond that nothing in all creation can break. We faced the dry seasons when union doesn't feel real, and learned it is fact before it is feeling. We saw that union bears fruit, breaks down walls, overflows in love, settles our identity, and will one day be consummated face to face. It has been a full and glorious inheritance to survey.

But if this month has been merely information—thirty-one interesting truths added to your store of knowledge—then it has failed, and we must say so plainly on this last day. Union is not a doctrine to admire from a safe distance. It is a reality to inhabit. The question that has run underneath every single day is the question that remains now, on the final day, unanswered by anyone but you: are you living from it? Do you wake as one indwelt by Christ, or as a spiritual orphan? Do you fight sin as one already free, or as a slave straining at broken chains? Do you love as one filled with His love, and pray as one who already belongs? "Christ lives in you" (Colossians 1:27). Everything changes the day that stops being a sentence you affirm and becomes the life you actually live.

And see how this gathers up the whole long journey you have been on—not just this month, but all of it. You surrendered, so that self might decrease. You humbled yourself, so that He might increase. You learned to abide, so that His life might flow through you. And now you arrive at the destination toward which all of those were quietly aiming: not merely a disciplined life, not merely a moral life, but a life so joined to Christ that His life and yours have become one. "It is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me" (Galatians 2:20). This is what all the postures, all the disciplines, all the dying and yielding were for. Not to make you a better version of the old self, but to bring you into oneness with Christ.

And notice—of all places it could have ended—where Jesus' prayer comes to rest: "that… you love them as much as you love me." The journey ends exactly where it began, in love. You are loved by the Father with the very love He has for His own Son. Not a lesser love, doled out in careful measure to a distant creature. Not a probationary love you must keep renewing by good behavior. The same infinite, eternal, unshakable love that has flowed between Father and Son from before the world began now rests, in full and without reservation, on you. This is the ground beneath your union and the reason for your very existence. You were not made to earn love. You were made to be loved like this, and to live inside it.

So do not close this month and quietly return to living as a spiritual orphan, as though these thirty-one days were a lovely retreat you now leave behind. You are one with Christ. Live there. Draw your life from Him rather than manufacturing it from your own thin resources. Let His love overflow through you to His people and to a watching world that will believe when it sees a oneness it cannot explain. And when you forget—as you will, again and again—do not despair; simply return to the one staggering truth that has held every one of these days together: "I am in them, and you are in me." That is not poetry. It is the deepest reality of your existence. You were made for this oneness. The whole of your life, the whole of your salvation, the whole of eternity, comes down to it. Now go—and live it.

Prayer: Father, thank You for these thirty-one days of learning what it means to be one with You. Do not let it remain mere information, filed away and forgotten—let it become my actual life. Christ lives in me; teach me to live from that reality every ordinary day. And thank You, above everything else, that You love me as much as You love Your own Son. That love is my ground, my reason, my home. I am Yours, and You are mine. Make me one with You, and keep me there. Amen.

Today, on the last day of the month, write one sentence naming the single truth about union God most wants to become real in your life from here forward. Put it somewhere you will see it every day. Then pray John 17:22–23 over yourself one final time—not as a passage you've studied this month, but as the life you are now committed to living.
