Day 12

The Spirit Who Makes Us One

Scripture: 1 Corinthians 12:13

We have spent days marveling that we are united to Christ. Today we must ask the question that keeps union from becoming a beautiful abstraction: how? By what actual power is a finite, time-bound, sin-scarred human being joined to the eternal, risen Christ who sits at the Father's right hand? Scripture answers with one voice and points to one Person: the Holy Spirit. "Some of us are Jews, some are Gentiles, some are slaves, and some are free. But we have all been baptized into one body by one Spirit, and we all share the same Spirit" (1 Corinthians 12:13). The Spirit is not merely a benefit of the union. The Spirit is the very bond of it—the living cord that ties you to Christ and Christ to you.

This changes how you understand the whole of your spiritual life, because it means union is not an idea you adopt, a feeling you work up, or an achievement you maintain by effort. It is a work the Spirit performs and sustains. "God has identified us as his own by placing the Holy Spirit in our hearts as the first installment that guarantees everything he has promised us" (2 Corinthians 1:22). The Spirit within you is God's own signature written across your life, the seal that marks you as His property, the down payment—the earnest money—that guarantees the full inheritance is coming. You did not tie the knot. He did, and He holds it.

Feel the weight of that for your worst days. If union depended on the strength of your grip, it would fail the first time your grip failed—the first cold season, the first collapse of faith, the first stretch where God feels absent and prayer feels dead. But the bond is not your hold on Christ; it is the Spirit's hold on you. On the days your faith blazes and on the days it gutters down to a smoking wick He will not extinguish, the Spirit remains, keeping the union intact. "And because we are his children, God has sent the Spirit of his Son into our hearts, prompting us to call out, 'Abba, Father'" (Galatians 4:6). Even your cry to God is the Spirit crying within you. The union is Spirit-sealed, and therefore it is secure in a way you could never make it.

But the Spirit does not only secure the union; He makes it felt. This is the difference between believing you are loved and being flooded with the sense of it. "For his Spirit joins with our spirit to affirm that we are God's children" (Romans 8:16). "For we know how dearly God loves us, because he has given us the Holy Spirit to fill our hearts with his love" (Romans 5:5). When the far-off truths of the gospel suddenly go warm—when "Christ in you" stops being a phrase and becomes fire in your chest—that is not you manufacturing an emotion. That is the Spirit doing His proper work: taking what is true about Christ and making it real, present, and tangible within you. Cold theology becoming living flame is not you trying harder. It is the Spirit answering the ache to know Him.

And here is the truth we would rather skip, though Paul will not let us: the same Spirit who joins you to Christ joins you inseparably to everyone else He indwells. Look again at the verse—Jew and Gentile, slave and free, people who shared nothing in common, no culture, no class, no history, nothing but the one Spirit poured out on them all, baptized by that one Spirit into one body. You cannot be joined to the Head and remain detached from the members. Union with Christ is never a private transaction between you and Jesus alone. The Spirit who unites you upward to Christ simultaneously unites you outward to His people, and to refuse the second is to misunderstand the first.

This exposes something searching. When we harbor bitterness toward another believer, when we write off Christ's people and prize a "just me and Jesus" faith, we are not merely being difficult—we are resisting the very Spirit whose nature is to make one what was many. Division does not only wound the body; it grieves the Spirit who joined it. "Make every effort to keep yourselves united in the Spirit, binding yourselves together with peace" (Ephesians 4:3). The unity is His gift; the guarding of it is our charge. We do not create the oneness—we protect what the Spirit has already made.

So if you long for a deeper union—if you ache to feel what you believe, to have Christ move from a doctrine in your head to a presence in your depths—do not try to feel your way there by strain. Ask. "If you sinful people know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him" (Luke 11:13). The Spirit is not withheld from the hungry. The very One whose work it is to make Christ real in you delights to do it. Stop grasping for the union by effort and receive it from the Spirit who is already holding you.

Prayer: Holy Spirit, You are the living bond between me and Christ—the seal on my life, the guarantee of everything the Father has promised. Thank You that my union does not hang on the strength of my grip but on Your faithful hold, keeping me on the days I blaze and the days I barely smolder. Make the reality of Christ within me warm and living, not cold and distant. And join me more deeply to Your people; forgive the divisions I have tolerated, and make me a guardian of the oneness You have made. Amen.

Today, ask the Holy Spirit directly and specifically to make your union with Christ felt, not merely believed. Pray: "Spirit of God, You are the bond between me and Jesus. Make Him real to me today—not a doctrine, but a Presence." Then move through your day watching for the moments He answers: a sudden surge of assurance, an unexpected love for someone you'd written off, a nearness you know you did not manufacture.

Your union does not hang on the strength of your grip, 

but on the Spirit who has taken hold of you—and will not let go.
