Day 10
Christ In You, the Hope of Glory
Scripture: Colossians 1:26–27
Paul calls it a secret kept hidden for ages and generations—a mystery so vast that the prophets strained toward it and could not lay hold of it, that angels longed to look into, that all the faithful of old lived and died reaching for without fully grasping. And then, having built the anticipation to a height that should leave us breathless, he unveils the mystery of the ages in six words that ought to stop us cold: "Christ lives in you" (Colossians 1:27). All the longing of the centuries, all the strained hope of prophet and patriarch, comes down to this—Christ, in you.
Hear the whole sentence and refuse to rush it: "For God wanted them to know that the riches and glory of Christ are for you Gentiles, too. And this is the secret: Christ lives in you. This gives you assurance of sharing his glory" (Colossians 1:27). Notice what Paul draws out of the indwelling—not first comfort or power, but assurance. Hope. And not a fragile, fingers-crossed, maybe-someday wish, but a settled and grounded confidence that glory is coming. Why so confident? Because the down payment of glory is not held in escrow somewhere far off. It already lives inside you. The guarantee of the future has taken up residence in your present.
We are relentless in looking everywhere but within for our hope. We stake it on changed circumstances, on better outcomes, on the resolution of the problem that currently consumes us—and so our hope rises and falls with things entirely outside our control. But Paul plants our hope somewhere no circumstance can reach and no loss can touch: in the Christ who dwells in us. "Christ in you, the hope of glory." As long as He lives in you, hope has a home in you that no external ruin can evict. Your circumstances may collapse; the indwelling Christ does not move out. This is why the believer's hope is not optimism about outcomes. It is a Person living within.
Feel how this dignifies the most ordinary believer beyond all reckoning. You may look at your life and see nothing remarkable—an unglamorous job, an unnoticed faithfulness, a name no one will remember. But if Christ lives in you, then you are a walking dwelling place of the living God, carrying within a frail and unimpressive frame the very hope of all creation. "Don't you realize that all of you together are the temple of God and that the Spirit of God lives in you?" (1 Corinthians 3:16). You are holier ground than you know. The most sacred place you will stand today is not a building. It is the ground beneath the person Christ indwells—which is to say, wherever you are.
And here is where this truth becomes a weapon against the two voices that torment us most. Shame says: you are nothing, too broken, too ordinary, too far gone for glory. Despair says: nothing will ever change, so stop hoping. But the mystery of the ages answers both with the same six words. The assurance of glory does not rest on your worthiness, your progress, or your track record. It rests entirely on the presence of Christ within you. If He is in you, glory is as certain as sunrise—not because you have earned it, but because He is there, and He is the guarantee. Shame cannot survive contact with "Christ lives in me." Despair cannot outlast it.
This is also the answer to the quiet suspicion that glory is for other people—the impressive Christians, the ones who seem close to God, but surely not someone like you, with your history and your struggles. But the indwelling makes no such distinction. Christ does not live more fully in the celebrated saint than in the trembling new believer. "You also are complete through your union with Christ, who is the head over every ruler and authority" (Colossians 2:10). The hope of glory is not doled out by degrees according to spiritual achievement. It is a Person, given whole, to everyone in whom He dwells. If Christ is in you, you have the whole of the hope.
So carry yourself today as one indwelt by God—not with arrogance, but with a quiet, unshakable dignity that no insult and no failure can dislodge. When shame whispers that you are nothing, answer with the mystery hidden for ages: Christ lives in me. When despair whispers that nothing will ever change, answer with the hope of glory: Christ lives in me. The greatest treasure in the universe has not merely visited you—He has moved in and taken up residence in an ordinary heart. Let that reality set the tone of your whole day.
Prayer: Lord Jesus, the mystery hidden for ages and longed for by prophets is that You would live in someone like me—the hope of glory dwelling in an ordinary, unremarkable heart. Forgive me for looking everywhere but within for my hope, staking it on circumstances that rise and fall. You are my assurance. You are the glory to come, already resident within me. When shame or despair speak, teach me to answer with the mystery of the ages. Let me carry myself today as one indwelt by the living God. Amen.
Today, every time shame or despair speaks to you—"you're nothing," "nothing will change," "glory isn't for someone like you"—answer it out loud or under your breath with the six-word truth: "Christ lives in me." Let that one sentence become your reflexive reply to every accusation. The hope of glory is not out ahead of you waiting to be earned; it has already moved in.
Scripture for Reflection:
1 Corinthians 3:16 — "The Spirit of God lives in you."
Ephesians 3:17 — "Christ will make his home in your hearts as you trust in him."
Colossians 2:9–10 — "You also are complete through your union with Christ."
The greatest treasure in the universe has not merely visited you—He has moved into an ordinary heart and made it His home.
