The logo of this ministry is a visual sermon — preaching in image what we teach in word. Each element draws directly from Scripture, and together they tell one story: the story of what God does in His people, and how He does it.
The image is rich with biblical symbolism and draws directly from Malachi 3:2-3, which speaks of the refining fire of the Lord. Here is a breakdown of the elements and their spiritual meanings.
The Fire
Symbolism
The refining fire of the Lord, named in Malachi 3:2-3:
"But who will be able to endure it when he comes? Who will be able to stand and face him when he appears? For he will be like a blazing fire that refines metal, or like a strong soap that bleaches clothes. He will sit like a refiner of silver, burning away the dross. He will purify the Levites, refining them like gold and silver, so that they may once again offer acceptable sacrifices to the Lord." — Malachi 3:2-3 (NLT)
Meaning
The fire is the central image of this ministry's name and identity. It represents God's refining work in the lives of His people — the process by which He burns away what does not belong, exposes what has been hidden, and forms in His own the image of His Son. It is fire wielded by a loving Refiner who never abandons the crucible, never lets the heat exceed what we can bear, and never stops until the work is done.
For a fuller treatment of this refining work and what Scripture teaches about how God uses fire in the believer's life, see The Refining Process of God.
The Wooden Cross
Symbolism
The cross stands behind the fire because the cross is the foundation of everything the fire accomplishes. Without the cross, the refining fire would be the fire of judgment. Through the cross, it is the fire of love.
Scripture
"He personally carried our sins in his body on the cross so that we can be dead to sin and live for what is right. By his wounds you are healed." — 1 Peter 2:24 (NLT)
Meaning
The cross refers to the foundation of salvation — that no one can endure the refining fire without first passing through the cross. It is the place where Christ bore the wrath we deserved, the place where the gate to life was opened, the place from which all spiritual healing and sanctification flow. The cross connects the suffering of Christ on our behalf with the refining suffering that follows in those He has claimed — and reveals that even our refining is rooted in the love that sent Him to die.
The Dove with an Olive Branch
Symbolism
The dove descending toward the fire and the cross is the long-standing biblical symbol of the Holy Spirit (Matthew 3:16, where the Spirit descends on Jesus like a dove). The olive branch in the dove's mouth recalls the dove that returned to Noah after the flood, signaling that the judgment was over and the earth was again habitable (Genesis 8:11). It represents peace, specifically peace after judgment.
Meaning
The Holy Spirit descends to bring peace, comfort, and renewal — the fruit of the refining work, the resting place of God's people after the fire has done its work. The dove and olive branch together show the balance between purification (fire) and restoration (Spirit). The olive branch also hints at anointing — for olive oil was used in biblical times to anoint kings, priests, and prophets, and the Spirit is the One who anoints the people of God for the work He has called them to.
The Words: The Refinery — Malachi 3:2-3
Symbolism
The name itself is anchored to the Scripture from which it was drawn.
Meaning
The Refinery is not just a place — it is a spiritual process. It refers to God's intentional work of sanctifying and setting apart His people. This is the name of a ministry, a movement, rooted in the passage's promise that God will purify His people like silver and gold. The name emphasizes deep discipleship, real cleansing, and a calling to walk as a refined people — set apart, holy, and ready to be used by the Master for His purposes.
Combined Meaning
Together, the image tells a profound spiritual story.
Before the Holy Spirit can fully move and rest upon a life or a people, they must first pass through the refining fire of God — a fire rooted in the sacrifice of the cross. Only then does the peace of God, the presence of the Spirit, and the purity of gold emerge.
This is what The Refinery exists to walk with you through. Not a slogan. A spiritual reality. The fire is real, the cross is real, the Spirit is real, the peace is real — and the call on every life is to walk through them all in the order God Himself has ordained.
When you see this logo, see all four elements. See the fire that purifies. See the cross that makes it possible. See the Spirit that comes after. See the peace that follows. And know that this is the road on which we walk, by God's grace, together.
