Biblical Focus: Jacob
Genesis 32:28 (NLT)
“Your name will no longer be Jacob,” the man told him. “From now on you will be called Israel, because you have fought with God and with men and have won.”
Read Genesis 32:22–32. Jacob had spent his whole life grasping. His name meant “heel-grabber,” the one who schemes his way forward. He tricked his brother, deceived his father, and outmaneuvered his uncle. He got what he wanted, but he was never at peace.
Then, alone by the river the night before facing Esau, Jacob wrestled with God until daybreak. And God did something strange. He did not defeat Jacob with power. He touched his hip and crippled him. Only then, when Jacob could no longer fight, could he only cling, did God bless him and change his name.
This is how transformation often happens. Not through a gentle lesson, but through a night of wrestling that leaves us limping. God had to break Jacob’s strength before He could change Jacob’s name. The schemer had to stop scheming.
Notice the question God asked: “What is your name?” (v. 27). God knew. But Jacob needed to say it out loud: I am Jacob. I am the grabber. Transformation requires confession. You cannot receive a new name until you honestly admit the old one.
Jacob walked away from that river with a limp he carried for the rest of his life. Every step reminded him: I was changed by God, not by my own strength. If you carry a limp, a wound or weakness from your own wrestling with God, do not be ashamed of it. It may be the very mark of your transformation.
The Practice of Transformation
Finish this sentence honestly before God: “My old name is ______, because I have always ______.” Then ask Him to show you the new name He is giving you.
✦ Reflection ✦
Where have you been grabbing for what only God can give?
Prayer: Lord, I stop wrestling for control. I will only cling. Bless me, and change my name. Amen.
Some blessings come only with a limp.
